About White Noise Machines
Most people believe they know what white noise is and what it can be
used for. For example, most people believe that it creates a sort of background noise capable
of drowning out the sounds which might disrupt work or sleep.
In fact, white noise machines do not make a sound that works in the background,
but instead create a multi-channel frequency that is the equivalent of many sounds
being combined. This is the reason that the sounds which come from the best white
noise machines often remind people of the gentle hum of a window fan or the static
coming from a radio.
How can such sounds actually be used in a way that is beneficial to the
listener? Instead of creating background noise, most white noise machines override the
current array of background sounds instead. For instance, let’s say that
you live in a very busy and somewhat noisy neighborhood which often causes your
new baby to have difficulty with an afternoon nap. The revving engines, the children
at play, and the various sounds of traffic and residents can all be eliminated
through the soothing sound of a high-quality white noise machine. After only
one or two uses you will find that your baby is not startled out of sleep when
neighbors have a loud conversation or when someone hits the brakes of their car
too hard at the nearby stop sign.
Of course, it isn’t just sleeping children who will benefit from the use
of these remarkably handy machines, and millions of people bring their white
noise machines to their office each day or even when they go on a trip. Consider
how restful and relaxing each night’s sleep will be when you have a consistent
sound gently filling your hotel room and blocking unfamiliar noises from the
hallway outside. Imagine being able to focus on the text on your computer screen
and not the telephone conversation of the co-worker nearby.
White noise will allow you to focus on work, relax completely, and sleep
without interruption. It is important to recognize, however, that it
will take a bit of getting used to. Many people who have only just started to
use the machines report that they cannot get to sleep or focus on work because
of the persistent sound, but this is normally only a brief issue and most are
able to recognize the benefits after only one or two experiences with their machines.
